Blocked Pipe

Pipe blockages really are a plumbing emergency and with UK weather being what it is, a blocked pipe can very quickly turn into a burst one. The good news is that they can be fixed by anyone saving you the hassle of finding a reputable plumber and also the expense of paying for his services! While blocked pipes may be a nightmare, the truth is they are something that most of us can fix with just a few tools.

No matter how stressed you are or how chaotic things have become, a blocked pipe isn't a disaster. In modern houses it's simply just another problem that needs fixed! In the case of a blocked pipe, the first thing that you should do is try to locate the problem. After finding out what it is, you can then make a choice as to whether it's fixable or whether you'll need to call in a professional.

Looking at the various types of problems people face, the most common isn't really a blocked pipe; it's more of a blocked appliance. One such example is when a toilet blocks up. The problems never usually more than a foot or two down the piping, and while it is technically a blocked pipe, you don't need to be an expert to fix the problem.

Likewise with a sink, the problems is almost always not the pipe that goes into the wall, but the pipe that comes from the sink itself. By dismantling the U bend or P trap as its known, you can clean out the P trap and the affected part of pipe which fixes most blockages.

Finally, the other main cause of blockage is when water exits the house. The main wastewater pipe can get blocked as in some cases they aren't very large, and if something has survived the pipes inside your home; it may get caught up with dirt and other minor blockages to choke up the whole system. While this is most definitely a blocked pipe, it's also something that you can unblock with specialized drain rods which cost around £20.

A blocked pipe can happen for any number of reasons in addition to those above. Sometimes pipes get blocked due to frost or more severely because they get broken by construction or something similar. In many cases when the blockage isn't immediately evident, it's time to call in the plumber who can help you find the blockage and fix the problem quickly.

Pipe blockages can happen at almost any time, and usually it's something that you can diagnose, locate and repair yourself. Truthfully when it comes to repairing blocked pipes, it's not so much a skill to master but rather a technique that anyone can learn. By learning the basics, you can not only save yourself a fortune, but you can save a great deal of time because although it's an urgent problem for you, many plumbers really will take a day and an age to arrive!
